Six homeless residents in downtown Omaha were recently given a rather unique gift – a handwritten note, ham sandwich and a smile, delivered by Grace University student LaQuana Billingsley.

The good Samaritan student later learned that one of the sandwich recipients – Fred Shafer – was suicidal that day. Her small gesture of kindness changed his life. As a result, Fred ended up at Omaha’s Open Door Mission in a class taught by Dr. Tara Rye, Grace University’s Dean of Women. During this time, Shafer shared his story of a young woman who saved his life. He wanted to thank her.

Last month Shafer and Billingsley had a chance to meet. Smiles were exchanged; and the original handwritten note – still intact. The note was signed Yeshua AKA Jesus.
