President Emeritus Recognized for Service to Higher Education

ABHE Award

The Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) has awarded the distinguished Biblical Higher Education award to Dr. James Eckman, president emeritus of Grace University. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing and assuring quality biblical higher education.

Dr. Eckman was recognized because of his nearly 20 years of commitment to biblical higher education and the ABHE – chairing 20 accreditation review teams, serving on the ABHE Commission for two terms and serving on the ABHE board. He served as AHBE Board chairman for three years and helped raise more than $100,000 for the ABHE’s leadership center in Orlando.

Dr. Eckman has served at Grace University since 1983, retiring as president in 2012, but continuing as a professor of Bible and History.

Dr. Eckman is an ordained minister. He has expertise in historical theology, with special emphasis on the American church and revivalism. He has conducted marriage seminars, current issue seminars, family life conferences, Bible conferences and retreats throughout the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Ecuador.  In addition to his conference ministry, Dr. Eckman serves as a part-time staff member with Steadfast Bible Fellowship Church in Omaha.   For over twenty years he hosted a radio program on current issues called “Issues in Perspective” that aired over the Salem Broadcasting Network.  It continues today as a blog at  He has authored four books, most recently A Covenant People: Israel from Abraham to the Present (Westbow Press, a division of Thomas Nelson).
