Karl Pagenkemper, Grace University vice president of academic affairs is pleased to announce the addition of a theatre concentration beginning with the 2015 academic year.
“Grace has a multitude of students with a theatrical gift,” Pagenkemper said. “Adding theatre is a natural progression, as music and performing arts continue to thrive at this university.”
The program will be led by Mackenzie Dehmer, Grace University director of financial aid. Dehmer has directed Grace’s annual winter musical for the past six years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre from the University of Missouri Kansas City and is currently working on her Master of Arts in Theatre with Regent University. Dehmer has been a professional performer and director in the Kansas City area for almost 10 years and has performed with Musical Theatre Heritage, The Chestnut Theater and numerous community theatres. She has performed locally for the Rose and Opera Omaha.
“Theatre is an art form that is able to touch people in ways that other art forms cannot. Storytelling ties directly back to scripture, and we are storytellers,” Dehmer said. “Emotions and actions are able to connect with people on a uniquely deep level, and we need professionals with a biblically based knowledge to go out and be lights in this area.”
The concentration will include classes in acting, directing, history, movement, speech, technical production, design, ministry and youth drama. Plans are in the works to develop a drama ministry troupe and expand the current performance schedule to include a fall production, winter musical and spring musical revue, as well as chapel performances and student showcases.
Students interested in learning more about the concentration should visit graceu.edu or call 402-449-3600.
