Family Ties Strong for Students at Grace

Longtime photography studio owner Dennis Applegarth understands the value of education. But because he also values time spent with his children, Applegarth pursued higher education alongside his three children at Grace University.

This spring, he graduated with one of them, and in 2012, he did the same.

Applegarth earned his master’s degree in Christian ministry and graduated alongside his daughter, Janelle, who earned her bachelor’s degree in English this past May. His son Jonah graduated with a bachelor’s degree in video production in 2013, attending Grace University with his dad, then both Dennis Applegarth and his oldest, Jessica, earned their bachelor’s degrees simultaneously in 2012 – Jessica in counseling and Dennis in business leadership and biblical studies.

“Being in the photography business – the memory business – I recognize the importance of family and the precious, limited time we have together. Being able to spend the time with my kids at Grace was priceless.” Dennis Applegarth said. “I felt the need to experience what Grace offered, to make sure my kids were getting the high-quality, biblically integrated education they were promised.

“Grace exceeded my wildest dreams,” he added.

Not only did the education he and his children receive surpass his hopes, but the patriarch said Grace University’s mission and actions truly reflect its name. He has even tried talking his wife, Norma, into pursuing a degree from Grace University, but she’s “adamant she’s done with school.”

“Knowing now about the quality of the people [at Grace], their dedication to God and solid biblical understanding, we would not hesitate to send our kids to Grace again,” Applegarth said.

Dennis Applegarth recently entered retirement from his Beatrice-based photography studio but plans to spend his spare time at Grace University as an adjunct professor. Of course, that means more quality time with his children, too. Jessica serves as the resident director at Grace and Janelle works in the student development office. Jonah currently works as a wildland firefighter.

Grace University, located in Omaha, Neb., is an accredited, private Christian university with more than 40 diverse areas of study for undergraduate, graduate and adult degree completion students including education, business, psychology, music, nursing and Christian ministries. The university’s mission is to develop servant leaders for the home, the church and the world through excellence in biblically integrated education.
