AmeriCorps VISTA

Volunteer Systems Coordinator

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a non-profit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development and otherwise assist low-income communities.

Heartland United Way in Grand Island, Nebraska is recruiting for a VISTA member to help Heartland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) build organizational capacity to serve more children in foster care with CASA volunteers. The VISTA member will accomplish this task through the creation of three unique volunteer recruitment, retention and recognition plans that focus on young professionals, the English-Spanish speaking community and individuals from the rural areas. The VISTA member will focus on recruiting, retaining and recognizing diverse CASA volunteers. Your capacity building efforts as a VISTA member will help us change the statistics for youth in foster care. CASA volunteers create change in children’s lives because youth are more likely to find a permanent home, less likely to reenter foster care and spend at least four months less in care than a child without a CASA volunteer. Applicants applying to be a VISTA member must be committed to achieving successf ul outcomes for people in the service area. The VISTA member will learn about the volunteer positions at the organization, generate connections in the communities served, research best practice volunteer strategies in other CASA programs, develop strategies for marketing and social media, write plans for designed volunteer practices and train staff on executing the plans. The VISTA member will develop a strong knowledge of the CASA program through extensive training, court observations and shadowing volunteers and staff.

Opportunity Coordinator

Heartland United Way is recruiting for a VISTA member to help us develop the infrastructure to implement the Circles program, a national poverty elimination program, to pilot in our area while bolstering community services to support the program (i.e. access to transportation, housing, etc.). It is Heartland United Way’s goal that after the Circles program has been implemented, participants will increase their financial knowledge, relationship capital and earning capacity in order to take the important steps out of poverty. A VISTA member will walk away from this position with an incredible knowledge of community collaboration, program implementation and assessing what conditions create and eliminate poverty. Applicants applying to be a VISTA member must be committed to achieving successful outcomes for people in the service area. The VISTA member will first assess the capacity to implement the Circles program with fidelity. After the VISTA member determines feasibility , they will create a program design, communicate with community partners, write for grant funding, develop recruiting and referring practices, create public awareness, identify community services and launch training.

Development Coordinator

Heartland United Way is recruiting for a VISTA member to help Multicultural Coalition meet the demands of the increasingly diverse population in Grand Island, Nebraska. The VISTA member will create a proactive development plan to grow and sustain the organization. Applicants should consider this a highly rewarding opportunity to change community conditions for the immigrant community in Grand Island because of the capacity built by VISTA member duties. If more newcomers had access to Multicultural Coalition’s programs and services, we believe their likelihood of success in accessing education, jobs and needed community services would be greatly increased. VISTA members will learn about an incredible organization and community, play a pivotal role in the growth and continued success of the organization and be a part of only one of two one stop multicultural resource centers in the Midwest. Applicants applying to be a VISTA member must be committed to achieving successful outcomes for people in the service area. The VISTA member will assess the organization’s funding structure, build a collaborative team, compile research about best practices, identify untapped funding, create development and marketing plans and coordinate strategies for implementation.

Community Engagement Coordinator

Heartland United Way in Nebraska is recruiting for a VISTA member to help increase the diversity in our organizations to reflect the continuously changing, rich experiences of our four-county service area. The VISTA member will complete a community needs assessment to determine a plan for recruitment, training and engagement of diverse volunteers for the Heartland United Way and its Partner Agencies focusing on volunteers for board positions and mentoring roles in education-based programming. A VISTA member has the capacity to help connect the different sectors of our community together, so that Heartland United Way, its Partner Agencies and other non-profit organizations can operate at a higher level. A VISTA member will walk away from this position with an incredible knowledge of community dynamics, nonprofit structures and how best to market and strategize in both systems.
