BU 200D Spiritual Foundations of Leadership

Course Description

This course provides a framework of servant leadership through the study of Jesus’ earthly ministry.  The student will explore the differences between worldly leadership practices and spiritual leadership practices along with an emphasis on the difference between leadership and management in business.  Upon successful completion, each student will discover the tools to become successful leaders for the future.

Effectiveness

·         Students will introduce themselves to the class.

·         The discussions created by these questions will be used throughout the course to help us deal with certain issues faced by leaders.  You will be asked to either read a case study and comment on it, or create your own scenario and others will comment on yours. 

·         Students will explore, define, and expound on this topic of “What is Leadership” and discuss how they can build it into their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and the other student’s responses.  You will demonstrate an understanding of this topic by writing a response paper.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of following to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining what it takes to be a servant leader in a reflection paper.

Vision & Mission

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of wanting to be a leader to their own life.  If you aspire to be a leader you will want to have a clear understanding of what it means to be a leader and how you will want to define your leadership style.

·         Through this discussion question, the students will discuss how humility might play a role in leadership.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of humility to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining what it takes to be humble in a reflection paper.

Servanthood

·         Through this discussion question, the students will apply the concept of servant leadership to the passage in John 13 where Jesus washed His disciple’s feet. 

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of servant leadership to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining what it takes to be a servant in a reflection paper.

Risks

·         Through this discussion question, the students will apply the topic of motivation and how to encourage employees or volunteers to have a good attitude towards their jobs and their organization even in the midst of hard times.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of motivation  to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining what it takes to motivate and keep good employees in a response paper.

Greatness

·         Through this discussion question, the students will apply the topic of burnout by analyzing the life of a local youth pastor.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of burnout to a situation they are familiar with and with the aid of the assigned reading will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining what it takes to find the appropriate balance in their life or the life of the person they are reflecting on.

·         Through this discussion question, the students will apply the topic of listening vs. just hearing to a situation they have been a part of or have heard about.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of listening to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining how to avoid misunderstanding by listening with understanding in a reflection paper.

·         Through this discussion question, the students will apply the topic of appropriate motivation by creating a scenario where this topic is needed and acting as an organizational consultant to analyze and interpret other students’ scenarios.

·         Students will explore, define, and apply this week’s topic of finding the right motivation to their lives with the aid of the assigned reading and will demonstrate complete understanding by outlining how to properly nurture a potential leader in a reflection paper.
