Dr. Troy Backhuus joined Grace University as an associate professor in the Fall of 2011. His teaching experience spans over a decade and includes courses in counseling, psychology, and sociology. He earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling Education and Supervision from Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA in 2012.
Dr. Backhuus is a licensed professional counselor practicing in the state of Nebraska. He began his counseling practice after graduating from Grace University in 2002. He continues to practice counseling along with his teaching responsibilities. Dr. Backhuus is also an ordained minister.
Dr. Backhuus teaches courses in the graduate college in the clinical mental health counseling program. He is the clinical director of the Grace Counseling Center.
Dr. Backhuus has led groups of counseling students to Tegucigalpa, Honduras to give support to missionaries and work with Honduran people in areas such as marriage, parenting, interpersonal relationships, and other issues as needed.
Dr. Backhuus has recently finished research on empathy and its role in marriage. He plans to continue to study issues and strategies for helping married couples and families. His major focus of research is in the area of emotion: its purpose, dynamics, anger management, emotional intelligence, etc. He is beginning study in the area of emotion in cancer patients and strategies for counseling survivors of cancer.
Dr. Backhuus lives in Nebraska where Husker football fever thrives year round. He enjoys getting away from the world by working in his wood shop. He thoroughly enjoys traveling to the mountains and camping with his family
