Urban Ministries Concentration

Michael A. Smith, M.Div.

This concentration is designed for students who desire to work in an urban ministry such as: urban missionary; rescue mission; jail and prison ministry; or social worker. The student will learn about cities both at home and around the world, how they are designed, the people of the city, the urban dilemma and the exciting opportunities for ministry. The student will learn how to minister in the inner city by participating in various learning experiences. Areas of studies will include: gangs, drugs, immorality, the bureaucracy, and the inner city church. Students spend time in the field doing their SLT, Practica, and Field Work.

Objectives

The student who completes the Urban Ministries Concentration should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the “urban dilemma” and show a biblical response;
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of other peoples and their cultures both locally and globally;
  3. Provide a biblical perspective on society;
  4. Give evidence of an ability to understand and cooperate with public administrators while maintaining a commitment to the “great commission;”
  5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of human development and the family as a vital unit in society;
  6. Construct a working model of an urban ministry with a biblical perspective.
  7. Fulfill the objectives of the Biblical Studies Division; and
  8. Fulfill the objectives of the General Studies Division.
